We are officially a day away from the big holiday! And since some of us don't count with the luxury of escaping the city for 4th of July I decided to put together this post sharing some of the über fun ways you can spend the holiday that may only involve a train ride and an adventurous soul.
1. Coney Island Boardwalk and the Hot Dog Eating Contest:
This is a classic NYC 4th of July activity! I did this for my 4th two summers ago and it was definitely an experience. To watch the hot dog eating contest do plan accordingly and head out there with time. My friends and I drove and since the highway was so backed up we missed the action by minutes. Also the Brooklyn Cyclones (which are the Mets' MiLB team) are playing the Williamsport at 5:00PM right at MCU park followed by post-game fireworks. This could honestly be a day filled with all types of fun!
2. Spend your day at Rockaway Beach
I know some people cringe when they hear the word Rockaway but I can attest to the fact that this beach has gotten so much better in the recent years. I went just last week with my friends and the post-sandy improvements are definitely showing. We laid out by 105-106th street and it was incredibly tranquil there. Also we counted with the perk of being just steps away from Caracas Arepas Bar which you must try if you're in the neighborhood. Another culinary gem by the beach is definitely Tacoway Beach, located at the Rockaway Surf Club which is essentially the home of the best maji maji tacos you will ever try.
3. Head out to a Brooklyn Rooftop Bar
If you're spending your day with family and then want to head out with friends to catch the fireworks (which will be on the east river this year) this is the way to do it. I mean let's face it, Brooklyn rooftops just reek coolness in the first place, add the fact that it's the 4th of July and you have a party secured in the bag. A bar of the said type that I've been frequenting tons lately is Berry Park which has the sickest view of the city and drink prices that won't break the bank.
4. Sneak into a NYC Hotel Pool
I know, this sounds risky (and maybe a tad bit illegal) but hey, if there's an entire article/guide on how to do it, it can be done. And if the beach is not you're thing this is definitely a more adventurous alternative to spending your day bathing in some sort of water. Unless, of course, your idea of adventure and water involves the Hudson river, but I definitely wouldn't recommend that...
5. Catch the Macy's Fireworks at Astoria Park
Like I mentioned before this year the fireworks will take place on the east side and this is most definitely the spot to go to with your family after your 4th of July BBQ to catch a glimpse of the show. Bring out your blanket, a little radio to play some tunes while you wait, and hey! why not your favorite rose?! it is a holiday after all!
I hope you drew some inspiration from this post and have a fun and adventurous Fourth of July!
